OAKLAND, Calif.—Oakland police are looking for the growers of at least 1,000 marijuana plants found after a small fire at a one-time Oakland fortune cookie factory.
Sgt. Rich Vierra says the pot plants, valued at about $500,000, were not burned during Monday’s fire in the former Kar Mee Fortune Cookie Factory in Oakland’s Chinatown district.
Police say the plants ranged in size from seedlings to 4 feet tall and were being grown in about 1,750 square feet of space.
The growers were apparently using an old power line outside the building to run the lights, ventilation and irrigation systems.
Authorities say the small blaze was sparked by an electrical malfunction.
The cookie factory’s previous owners were evicted last year.

This is why marijuana prohibition does not work! LA Kush brings you some news.
Former mountain biking world champion Melissa (Missy) Giove pleaded guilty Tuesday to helping run a coast-to-coast marijuana smuggling ring.
She was arrested in upstate New York last June after one of the ring’s couriers was intercepted driving a truck carrying 158 kilograms of marijuana in Illinois and agreed to co-operate with authorities.
Giove pleaded guilty to a federal drug conspiracy charge Monday in Albany. She is expected to be sentenced March 25 to up to five years in prison.
Giove is 37 and lives in Chesapeake, Va. She was under surveillance when she met the courier and drove off with the truck. Authorities say she was taken into custody trying to unload the shipment at the Saratoga County home of another man charged in the case.By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LA Kush brings to you some Marijuana News on this wonderful monday!
SAN ANTONIO — A man was arrested after San Antonio police found $2 million worth of marijuana underneath crates of watermelons after a traffic stop.
San Antonio police spokesman Matthew Porter said Juan Francisco Alcala, of Chula Vista, Calif., remained in the Bexar County Jail on Sunday on one count of possession of marijuana from 50 to 2,000 pounds. His bail was set at $20,000.
Alcala was stopped early Sunday after officers noticed one of the headlights on the tractor-trailer he was driving was out. A San Antonio police incident report shows he was the sole occupant of the cab.

When will the insanity end?! LA Kush believes that any legitimate patient should not be facing any jail or prison time. John Wilson, the New Jersey man who had been charged with operating a drug manufacturing facility for the marijuana he grew to treat his multiple sclerosis, was found guilty yesterday of two lesser charges, and now faces five to 10 years in prison.

Throughout most of his trial, Wilson (left) had been prevented from mentioning his condition, any evidence of marijuana’s therapeutic value, or the fact that New Jersey may be weeks away from becoming the 14th state to pass a medical marijuana law.

In a small victory, Wilson was found not guilty of the most serious charge (operating a drug manufacturing facility) perhaps in part because he was finally allowed to mention his disease before the jury in the trial’s closing days.

Regardless, this 37-year-old with a debilitating disease is now facing the possibility of spending the next decade of his life behind bars, simply for trying to relieve his symptoms with “one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man.”By Marijuana Policy Project

lil-wayne
LA KUSH just found out that Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., better known as Lil Wayne, and 11 members of his entourage were detained Friday in Falfurrias, Texas after being stopped by the United States Border Patrol where officials found marijuana on two of the tour buses.

Earlier today, TMZ reported that Wayne’s lawyer said the rapper did not receive any citations unlike some of the others on board. The amount of marijuana that was discovered is unknown but agents claim that no drugs were found on Wayne or any members of his entourage, and that the drugs the dog sniffing K-9 units tracked down were stashed on the bus.

The Grammy award winning emcee was scheduled to perform in Laredo, Texas at the Laredo Entertainment Center on Friday evening but because of the incident, the show was postponed. According to the event center’s website, the concert has been rescheduled for this evening.

The Rebirth rapper’s troubles are far from over as Wayne is scheduled to serve prison time in February after a gun was found on his tour bus back in 2007. He is also facing separate charges for felony weapons and drug possession after a 2008 search of his tour bus in Arizona where authorities discovered marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy and a handgun.By Krysten Hughes

palmsprings
PALM SPRINGS – The Palm Springs City Council met to decide which two collectives would be permitted to sell medicinal marijuana under the City new Medicinal Cannabis ordinance. After over 45 minutes, the Council voted to rewrite the ordinance.

It began as a discussion over where the co-ops could be located. It then turned into whether or not they could receive money from patients for the medical marijuana. A true cooperative means members as a whole grow and cultivate the marijuana. A dispensary would allow the owners of the location to grow, cultivate and sell the marijuana to patients.

The City’s Attorney Douglas Holland says, “The idea that someone with a card can go in and buy medical marijuana may not be consistent with the law”. He goes on to say the City Council instructed him to write the ordinance according to the California Attorney General’s standards. Councilwoman Ginny Foat disagrees with the City’s Attorney saying, “That was his opinion of what he’d like to see, that’s not what the ordinance says.”

It’s unclear what changes will be made to the ordinance when the Council takes up the issue after the beginning of the new year. In the meantime, since the Council did not award the two permits, selling medicinal marijuana in the city of Palm Springs remains illegal.
